I have been designing and making hats for about 11 years. Initially training with Janie Lashford in the Cotswolds, and subsequently attending various workshops with couture milliners in London, and a short course in theatrical millinery with Jane Smith at Kensington and Chelsea College. Many of my skills are self taught, taking my inspiration from the sculptural quality of millinery materials, colour, texture, form and the sheer theatricality of a hat. Initially I sold at Craft Fairs under the name Madasa Hats.
My hats have appeared on the catwalk at various charity fashion shows including NSPCC and Children's Hospice. In 2005 I was invited by Kneehigh Theatre to participate in the market which was integral to the performance of 'The Man With Enormous Wings' at Hayle Quay. At the first Hidden Art, Craft and Design Show in Cornwall I had a piece selected for the curated show held at Godolphin House. In 2009/2010 I taught a successful evening class at Penwith College where I received outstanding feedback from my students.
All the hats are available for hire, with some available for purchase.
The manufacturers stock I hold includes pieces by Nigel Rayment, Whitely and Failsworth.
The handmade bespoke hats are made using traditional and innovative techniques using sinamay, straw or felt and trimmed with high quality materials - silks, feathers and beading. Where appropriate to achieve the right effect I am happy to use recycled materials. I specialise in designing to reflect the personality and style of the client with particular attention to proportion, colour co-ordination and detail. Commissions are predominately for occasion hats, but I have a range of designs in felt or straw for more everyday wear. I can also offer re-shaping, stretching and re-trimming of existing hats. Commissions also taken for men's hats.
I have many very favourable testimonials from clients, a selection of which are shown on the testimonials page.If you'd like to visit the studio and see the full range of hats, please call ahead to check we are open or to make an appointment.
